Since 1997, our Club Championships have been an annual celebration of the spirit of our league. The Championships are held over Memorial Day weekend, and registration is open to all current members. The proceeds of our Club Championships benefit two worthy causes: The Marsha Day Memorial Fund of the Astraea Organization and The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
The Marsha Day Memorial Fund of the Astraea Organization, which honors the life and work of Marsha Day, a community activist and former MTG board member. The Organization carries on the work of Marsha who was dedicated to working on behalf of runaway and homeless youths, people living with HIV/AIDS, women, and the poor.
The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
THE LIBERTY OPEN
In 1993, MTG created the Liberty Open, thereby officially joining the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) circuit. The GLTA manages and sanctions an international coalition of tennis tournaments. Each July 4th holiday, MTG and New York City draws players from all across the country and abroad. The Liberty Open offers extensive divisions of competition, proudly
including a full complement of women’s and mixed doubles events.
Strengthening our dedication and commitment to the community, MTG and the Liberty Open committee each year donate the proceeds from the tournament to a charitable organization. Some of our past designated recipients include God Loves We Deliver, GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), and the Hetrick Martin Institute.
ATLANTIC CUP
The Atlantic Cup was conceived in 1992 to promote inter-city league competition and friendship. This friendly annual event consists of singles and doubles round-robin play. The Atlantic Cup has traditionally been contested among east coast gay tennis leagues and currently includes the leagues of New York (Metropolitan Tennis Group), D.C. (Capital Tennis Association), and Boston (Tennis 4 All). MTG’s team is selected from the current membership and all active members are invited to try out.
Each year, the participating leagues rotate as hosts. MTG last proudly hosted the Atlantic Cup August 11 - 12, 2007 at the Sportime Tennis Center in Syosset, New York. The teams and results can be downloaded here. The 2009 Atlantic Cup competition will be held August 7 - 9, at Beren and Murr Tennis Centers at Harvard University in Boston, MA. MTG Team selection criteria listed here.
